Information letter Boompjes Residential Towers #3

Dear Residents and Business Owners,
In this third information letter, we continue to inform you of progress at the Boompjes Residential Towers building site.

Demolition work
The major demolition work involving the former office building is now complete. The structure was reduced to rubble over a matter of weeks. Some of the rubble was removed for reuse, while the rest has been used to fill the existing basement. This serves two purposes. Due to the demolition, there is now less weight resting on the foundation and piles. To prevent the basement from rising as a result of groundwater pressure, the rubble is temporarily weighing it down. At the same time, the rubble functions as a surface for machines working on the new building.

Utilities
The next step will involve rerouting the cables and pipes for various utilities, such as electricity, water and telecommunications. As the utility companies will carry out the work within the fence around the site, there will be no inconvenience or disturbance to local residents or traffic.

Construction pit
In October, the first sheet pile walls will be erected around the existing basement, starting on the side of the site facing the Boompjes.

Sheet pile walls are steel sections that are driven into the ground with a vibratory hammer to a depth of around 20 metres. While modern equipment absorbs most of the vibration, a noiseless technique for placing sheet pile walls is unfortunately unavailable. For nearby residents or business owners, the noise may therefore be an occasional nuisance. The construction will be carried out on workdays between 7:00 and 19:00 for a period of about eight weeks. We hope for your understanding.

Basement demolition
After creating the construction pit, the basement will be demolished and the pit excavated. We will concurrently begin work at street level on the pile foundation. The piles will be drilled rather than driven into the ground. This method decreases noise significantly. In the next information letter, we will provide more details.
